Management Science

  1. Abbreviation: MS. Management Science: The Business Use of Operations Research (Doubleday / Aldus). Listed in Whittaker’s chronology, not in the book list (pure-vsm-appendix).

In overview (ch. 27), MS is a short illustrated book for a general readership. No five-system model. Already present in 1967: management cybernetics (MS 1967: 144); a “rough” definition of variety (MS 1967: 37); implicit control; homeostasis; ultrastability; the word viable. The chapter does not claim Beer described MS as a stage of the VSM. Not project canon.

Where it is drawn on

Almost entirely pure-vsm-part-v-method-and-epistemology ch. 27. Also pure-vsm-part-i-foundations chs 1–2; ch. 24 vs decision-and-control; chs 4 and 12.

Formulation notes

From pure-vsm-appendix: variety “roughly defined as the possible number of distinguishable states in a situation” (MS 1967: 37 vs BOTF 1981: 403); ultrastability after “any kind of perturbation, including kinds the designer did not have in mind” (MS 1967: 155 vs BOTF 1981: 403). Working notes: MS 1967: 37 and 155 were not checkable (volume not available).
